Consistency is a struggle as old as the history of sports. In order to be considered great, teams must prove that they can do what needs to be done every time, and that's what the Lady Builders have been missing so far this season. The women play McPherson College at 5 and 7 p.m. today. The Lady Bulldogs are ranked one spot above Southwestern at fifth in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 4-4 record. The Lady Builders have a 4-6 record. They will travel to Ottawa on Saturday to play the fourth-ranked Lady Braves at 1 and 3 p.m. and then will host first-ranked Friends University on Monday at 5 and 7 p.m. The women split both games this past week when they played Mid America Christian on April 12 and Saint Mary on April 14. Against Mid America, the Lady Builders won the first game 5-2, and then lost the second 11-2. Whitney Baker, sophomore infielder, said, "We didn't hit the ball as well as we did the first game. In order to win games we need to score runs and we didn't do that." Amber Good, head softball coach, said, "We have to consistently play seven full innings of softball and continue to make adjustments at the plate." Again, the women won the first game, but came up short the second when they beat Saint Mary 2-1, then lost 5-2 on Monday. If there is a time to improve, now is it. There are about two weeks until the KCAC tournament at the beginning of May. Some seem to be thriving on the pressure to step up their game. "It makes me more excited," Leigha Foley, junior infielder, said. "I want to win even more because it's almost over and I know what we all can do so there's no reason to worry." Baker said, "This is a very crucial point in the season. I am less nervous because I have been playing for a month now so I know what I need to do and how to do it. A lot of people have improved since the beginning of the year. They have become more comfortable and confident on the field." Paige Carswell is a freshman majoring in journalism.
