This year will mark the second annual Sibling Weekend. Last year Joel Wilke, graduate student, planned the weekend as part of his Leadership project. He said, "I really enjoyed planning the SC Sibling Weekend last year. We had a great turnout and I hope that even more students choose to participate in this event this year."
The Admissions Office, Campus Life, and housing have teamed up to sponsor Sibling Weekend this year.
Rodney Worsham, associate director of admission, is assisting in the planning process. He said, "The campus thought it was a really positive thing last year. It gave an opportunity for brothers and sisters a chance to come and have experience in a low-key college environment. We want them to be able to relax."
A lot of students' younger siblings eventually attend Southwestern. Sibling Weekend is a way to introduce those younger siblings to the college and the atmosphere around it.
Lai-L Clemons, admissions counselor, is also helping with the planning process. She said, "It's a great way to introduce younger students to SC and let them know what SC is about and let them know what they can do and achieve."
The event is geared toward siblings from eighth grade through 12th grade. The purpose of Sibling Weekend is to have current student's siblings come to the college to spend the weekend with their sibling. Clemons said, "It's a chance to hang out."
Worsham said, "It's not like a Stau Bau event. It's low key."
By signing up for Sibling Weekend, students have the opportunity to be role models.
Wilke said, "Youth need to have positive role models and be encouraged to go to college. Sibling Weekend is a great way to do just that."
To sign up for Sibling Weekend, e-mail Worsham at rodney.worsham@sckans.edu, call the admissions office at extension 6236, or stop by the Welcome Center by April 23.
Registration is free and all meals provided during the weekend will be free for registered students. For a complete schedule of the weekend see below.
