Yearbook, newspaper earn awards

Fourteen students joined more than 200 student journalists from 30 colleges and universities April 6 and 7 at the Convention Center in Oldtown in Wichita for the annual Kansas Associated Collegiate Press spring conference.
Southwestern students attending the conference included Jessica Bernhardt, journalism junior, Paige Carswell, journalism freshman, Anthony Cook, communication junior, Diane Dixon, biology junior, Inger Marie Furholt, journalism freshman, Samantha Gillis, journalism freshman, Darius Hopkins, journalism junior, Nate Jones, communication junior, Drew Logsdon, communication senior, Brooke Newcomer, digital arts sophomore, Esmeralda Picon, digital arts senior, Cameron Siefkes, communication sophomore, Monica Springer, journalism senior, and Peggy Williams, journalism sophomore. They were accompanied by Stacy Sparks, assistant professor of journalism.
The conference included sessions led by Frank LoMonte of the Student Press Law Center. Students participated in publication critiques and roundtable discussions with other journalists in the state.
Part of the KACP spring conference is the presentation of awards for work submitted by students which has been published in the newspaper and yearbook during the year.
In the yearbook competition, the 2007 Moundbuilder received a silver medal in the overall competition. Corley placed first in cover design and earned an honorable mention in student life design. Kaydee Johnson, business administration freshman, took first place in yearbook sports season writing and Sarah Morton, digital arts senior, won the feature photo category. The team of Dixon and Susan Loveall, psychology senior, took second in theme development. Dixon placed second in sports photography and earned an honorable mention in event photography. Katie Allender, journalism junior, took third in feature photo and April McCormick, communication senior, earned an honorable mention in sports page design.
The Collegian earned a bronze medal in the four-year private college overall competition. The staff also earned an honorable mention for special sections. Springer placed third in news photography and earned honorable mention in news writing and headline writing. Siefkes took third in feature writing. Bernhardt earned an honorable mention for single ad design and for series writing. Cook earned an honorable mention for feature photography and for sports column writing. Carswell earned an honorable mention for sports news writing. Jones earned an honorable mention for illustration and Williams earned an honorable mention for editorial writing.
