It's gambling for a good cause.
Phi Delta Theta is taking advantage of a unique opportunity and will be hosting a poker tournament to fight Lou Gehrig's disease.
The poker tournament is open to anyone who is over 18 years old and discounts are being offered to Southwestern students. The event will be at the Cowley County Fairgrounds. Proceeds will go to the ALS Association which is an organization that works to find a cure for Lou Gehrig's disease.
But how does gambling for charity work?
Ryan Hopkins, graduate student, is the Phi Delta Theta president. He said, "Each player that comes to play will be donating money to the cause based on either their pre-registration or their day of registration suggested fee. As for the ALS Association, they will receive half of the net profits. We hope to at least raise $2,000 to $3,000 for them."
Members of Phi Delta Theta are excited for the opportunity to raise money for the cause.
Tanner McNinch, biology sophomore, said, "I think the possibilities of it as a money-maker are very great. We will be able to make a lot of money to benefit Lou Gehrig's disease in just one day."
Bryce Johnson, pre-law sophomore, said, "We appreciate anyone who is willing to come out there and help with it. People can just donate as well. They don't have to come play in the tournament. We look forward to having a large crowd, raising money for the organization, and having fun."
The tournament will take place Saturday from 1 to 10 p.m.
There is a $30 registration fee. People will be able to show up at 12 p.m. to register. There will be a consolation tournament from 3 to 4 p.m.
