Gradually the week got better.
After losing both sides of a double header March 25 to Kansas Wesleyan 0-9 and 3-13 the softball team started to iron things out the rest of the week.
The Builders went on to face Haskell Indian Nation two days later losing both sides of the double header 1-5 and 0-4.
The team got back on the winning side of things March 29.
Michelle Dreiling, junior utility, said, "We came out and played really well offensively and defensively the first game and were ahead most the game. The first game slipped away in the last couple innings, but we came out first inning of the second game with some fire and intensity, and kept that momentum going all seven innings. We were up, and stayed up, which is usually the key to winning games."
After a late charge by Sterling College the women lost the first game 5-6, but they came back to win the second 3-2.
Kristin McCart, senior third baseman, said, "We played well against Sterling College. Though we lost the first game, we played tough and played them very close. In the second game, Chrissy Mauzey (junior) pitched an excellent game and helped us leave with the win."
The team is currently sitting sixth in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, but the team is far from done fighting.
McCart said, "Losses are tough, especially conference games. In my four years as a Lady Moundbuilder we have been Conference Runner-Ups and Conference Champions, and I truly believe that this year we have a more talented group of girls than in previous years. With each game we are improving and I believe that as the season progresses everything will come together and when it does it will be really hard beat us."
Dreiling said, "Honestly, we have way too short of attention spans to get down today about something that happened two days ago. As a team, we do a really great job of moving on and improving every time we step out there on the field."
The team won't credit any individual for its success or blame anyone for the losses.
Dreiling said, "The unique thing about our team this year is that there's not just one MVP. Every single game someone different steps up and has a standout performance."
