Field work shortens intramural season

If you think it's strange that it's already April and there's very little intramural softball action going on, you're not the only one. While the season usually starts before Spring Break, this one has been pushed back and shortened unexpectedly.
The City of Winfield has decided to redo the fields this year. While this will make for a much nicer playing field later on, it has put intramurals into a bind. There will only be two Sundays in April available for intramural softball to take place.
Dan Falk, associate dean of students, said, "We were lucky to even get those two weekends. The bad side is there's no back-up plan if there's rain. There are no indoor facilities and there's no other time to use the fields. The question is how many people we can get playing and having fun."
Falk and Jason VenJohn, athletics assistant and intramurals director, met yesterday to figure out what will be done with the two weekends available. Coaches will be contacted first about the decision.
Falk said, "We're kind of leaning towards using one of the days as a practice day and then maybe doing a one-day double-elimination tournament. There's just not a lot you can do in two days."
They are also looking to have a beach volleyball game before the intramural games start.
Interest sheets last week indicated a good response, so what's left of the season is still on. There has been a communication problem with students because the intramural website has crashed. The IT team is working on it, and Falk said it should be back up by April 10.
Matt Hague, nursing senior, was on the co-ed champion softball team from last year. "We were excited about having a full season, but we may not now," Hague said. "That's disappointing. We were just hoping for the traditional co-ed softball season."
VenJohn said, "We're going to play as much as we can. It just depends on how successful we are at that."
