April has arrived and the spring semester is nearly over. So grab your laptops and virtual shopping carts and get busy. If you're like most of us and have forgotten how to go through the process of registration, Phil Schmidt, professor of history, will refresh your memory. Schmidt is the general advising coordinator. He said, "First you have to specify if you have a general adviser or a major adviser. Most freshman have general advisers and then you switch to major advisers your sophomore or junior year." The first step in the process is to set up a meeting time with your adviser. If you feel comfortable you can choose your classes before the meeting by logging on to IQ.Web. Then have your adviser approve them at the meeting or choose the classes with your adviser at the meeting. To choose your classes use the four year plan specified for your major. If you do not have this sheet go to Southwestern College's home page, click on Academics, scroll down to CampusNet, then Advising. On the side of the Advising page click on four year plan then fall 2008 and finally your specified major. Some major's schedules have not been finished yet, but will be soon. After choosing your classes you will send them to your adviser, he or she will approve or decline classes and remove ones that are a mistake. Once all required and elective classes are chosen and have been checked your schedule will be finalized. After that if you choose to add or drop a class you must go back to your adviser to fill out an "Add/Drop" form and turn it into Student Services on the first floor of Christy. Schmidt believes students should challenge themselves, not put off math classes, and take electives that will make you well rounded. "Graduate colleges look often look at general elective courses a student took to judge if they got a well rounded education." If you want to go above the maximum 16 hours, overload cost is $300 per credit hour. Samantha Gillis is a freshman majoring in journalism. You may e-mail her at samantha.gillis@sckans.edu.
