The Southwestern Invitational was held before Spring Break which gave the team the opportunity to break into the outdoor season.
Davion Mitchell, English senior, said, "I think I did alright this first outdoor meet. I wasn't feeling too good. Being under the weather I feel I did my best."
Jim Helmer, head men's track coach, said, "Charles Wells, Davion Mitchell, Kyle Larsen, and Cody Annis ran an excellent time for this early in the season and qualified for the national outdoor championship."
Mitchell said, "I look forward to a better performance next week at Cowley."
Helmer said, "This was a great start to our outdoor season. It's always good to compete at home, and we had 13 schools, excellent competition, great weather, and a lot of outstanding performances by our athletes."
Charles Wells, sports management junior, finished second in the 100 meter dash and met the qualifying standard for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Outdoor Championships.
Cody Annis, business administration senior, finished second in the 400 meter dash and became the ninth fastest in that event in SC track and field history. He just missed the national qualifying time.
Mike Kirkland, head women's track coach, said, "We had a great start to the outdoor season with a lot of outstanding performances against some quality competition. It also was some of the nicest weather we've had this early in the season and the ladies certainly took advantage of that, as well as competing at home for the first time this year."
Nique Wallace, early childhood graduate student, said, "I feel I did alright. I feel I will be better on Saturday. We had a hard practice Tuesday. I felt sore, so I didn't feel as fresh for this meet."
Sarah Morton, digital arts senior, won the triple jump and was a national qualifier.
Kirkland said, "Sarah started off her outdoor season much like she ended her indoor season."
Audry Anderson finished second in the 10,000 meter run and was a national qualifier.
The 4x100 meter relay team came within two tenths of a second from hitting the national qualifying mark.
Kirkland said, "It's a great start for this group, since we really only got to spend one day working on full-speed exchanges before the meet."
