Gusts of 50 mph winds and average winds of 30 mph winds greeted the golfers March 24 at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield. It was the first home invitational for the spring season. For the men's team, Patrick Fulton, business senior, shot a 76 the first day. Fulton said, "We all kept our composure and battled out there all day." Kenneth Wright, business administration sophomore, and Andrew Manley, accounting junior, also shot a 76 Monday. Fulton said, "The only holes that gave me troubles were three and four with the 30 mph wind and were tight with out of bounds and water hazards. I think altogether we gave a couple strokes back on those, which was easy to do in the conditions." The men's team led by six strokes on the first day. It has been almost an entire month since the teams' last golf tournament. Levi Moreland, business senior, said, "It let us get in more practice, especially since the weather had been pretty bad. It let us prepare a little more then usual." Moreland, along with a few other golfers, played at Fort Worth, Texas, so there was no real break for the men. Jared Paul, business sophomore, agreed that the break actually allowed time to fix some areas of his game. The women's team was three strokes behind on the first day of the tournament. They played Ottawa University, Arkansas-Fort Smith, Park University, Oklahoma Baptist University, Kansas Wesleyan, and Seminole State Community College The next tournament will be March 31 at Bethel. Moreland said, "Bethel has really improved since last year. They will be a tough competitor." Moreland is a senior. He only has a few tournaments left. He said, "I need to step up every tourney and not hold anything back at all. Also I do not want to leave Southwestern without getting our third conference championship in a row and third straight trip to nationals. It's my senior year, have to go big." Final scores for the March 24-25 tournament were not available at press time. Samantha Gillis is a freshman majoring in journalism. You may e-mail her at samantha.gillis@sckans.edu.
