Not many like to take a 900 mile round trip drive in the middle of the week, but for a few that trip was warranted. That trip was to Sioux City, Iowa, and the destination was the Tyson Events Center where the Southwestern College women's basketball team participated in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Tournament.
The team took on Davenport University this morning in Sioux City, Iowa, and a crowd of about 50, made up of faculty, students, parents, and even the school's president, made the trip to root them on.
The women fell short 76-66 in the opening game of the tournament after trailing by as much as 26, but those in attendance were cheering strong the entire game.
For some, the trip came on a whim.
Ted Shinneman, secondary education sophomore, said, "I got asked Sunday night by Caitlin and Jesse. They said 'Hey we got a car let's go for a road trip.' I was all about it. I'm all for road trips."
Shinneman took the trip with friends Caitlin Smith, undecided sophomore, Lyndsie Oathout, biology sophomore, and Jesse Lyons, business senior.
Smith said, "We took a rental. None of our cars get very good gas mileage. It was a really fun trip."
Their spirit trip wasn't complete without a stop in Olathe yesterday to root on the softball team. Smith, said, "We actually stopped by Kansas City to get a meal with Ted's family, and when we were there we watched the softball girls."
Oathout brought along a sign for roommate Jordan Jarnigan, sophomore guard.
The group of four made up most of the student body who attended, but some other familiar faces were also present.
Todd Moore, director of admissions, said of the crowd, "I think its great support for an 8:30 game on a Wednesday morning in Iowa. If we played in the evening I think we would have had quite a few more in attendance.
"I'm hoping the girls are focused on what the coach wants them to do, but I'm sure they've looked to see if parents or friends are here. It's always nice to have some purple in the audience."
