There's no more time to celebrate any success from the fall season for the tennis team. Tomorrow the members of the men's and women's tennis teams will compete at 1:30 p.m. at home against Central Christian College. For the men, it will be the first match of the spring season, and for the women it will be the third. While they beat Central Christian pretty handily during the short fall season, this spring game could be more of a challenge. The Tigers will be bringing more athletes this go-around, so there will be less forfeited points. "It'll be a completely different game," said John Paulin, head men's and women's tennis coach. "They'll be a lot stronger. It should be a pretty good match." This will be the last match for both teams until after Spring Break. Jacob Tafoya, computer information systems freshman, said that his goal for the team for the first match is to end up with a positive record for the day, but his personal goals for the season are a little more abstract. "I hope I can just set a positive image for everyone else," Tafoya said. "I want to improve on the basics of the game, and try to get people to come watch some matches. They're fun to watch, and you can cheer anytime you want." The team practices as much as possible with adverse weather conditions hindering the amount of hours they can put in on the courts. If the weather gets too bad, they've been known to take road trips to Ark City to practice on indoor courts there. The women's team competed at home against John Brown University yesterday. Results were not available at press time. While the women's team was beat 9-0 two weeks ago against Southern Nazarene University, they still have high hopes for the season. Lindsay Morgan, biology senior, said, "The beginning of the year is to figure out who works well together. We're finding a line-up and making use of our new talent." Although they lost some solid seniors last year, the team is confident that they can still be one of the top teams around. "We have a chance to be a contender," Morgan said. "People underestimate you when you've lost so many seniors, but the beauty of it for us is that we have really solid juniors, so we still have that chance."
