Outdoor track begins at home

The Southwestern Invitational will be March 13. This will be the first outdoor meet for the track team this season. There will be between 12 and 15 teams competing. Jim Helmer, head men's track coach, said, "We have a really good start overall. I am really pleased by the way we have progressed indoor and finished it off with a great national indoor meet. Now I just want us to carry the momentum to the outdoor meet Thursday, and take a break from the hard work for a while over spring break." Mike Kirkland, head women's track coach, said, "The team goal once again is to win the conference meet and qualify for the national outdoor championship. Our expectations are set high." Finishing up with the national indoor track meet this past weekend. "We had an outstanding meet. One of the major goals is to be an All-American. We were really pleased that our 4x8 scored some points allowing us to have four more All-Americans," Helmer said. For the women, Ericka Franklin, biolgy junior, ran her personal best. Sarah Morton, digital arts senior, jumped her personal best. Kari Roth, psychology sophomore, tied her career best in the high jump. Kirkland said, "I'm very proud of the way they represented at the highest level. They met and exceeded some of the expectations." Korie Hawkins is a freshman majoring in journalism.
