The search is on. The admissions
office is currently taking applications for S.H.A.R.P. Student
Ambassadors for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Student ambassadors give campus tours to prospective students
during two scheduled office
hours per week. They also help host three "Explore More" events throughout the year and "Scholarship Day" in March.
These students are the first people many campus visitors meet, and they represent the college
on a personal level.
The applications are available through Tami Schmidt, campus visit coordinator, at the admissions
office through Friday.
"The process is basically filling out the application and scheduling an appointment with us when you turn it back in. Then we interview the applicants,"
said Schmidt.
Todd Moore, director of admissions,
said, "We have up to 12 ambassador slots a year, but I won't fill a spot just to have that number. It depends on how good the applicants are."
There are three seniors exiting the staff at the end of this year, and another current ambassador who won't be returning after the fall semester, so there is room for new members to join the group.
Kelsey Reynolds, communication
junior, is in her first year as an ambassador. She said there are many perks to being involved in the program.
"We get nice purple polo's and student ambassador jackets. We get name tags that make me feel very official. I also really enjoy coming into my office hour and eating all the peanut butter chocolate kisses in the office,"
said Reynolds.
Lindsay Morgan, biology senior, is finishing up her third year as an ambassador, and is one of the exiting seniors. She is quite fond of the program, and will miss her duties as senior
ambassador. She said, "Being
an ambassador has been the perfect activity for me because I love meeting new people and it's a great way to give back to the college. I love Southwestern and I think that being a student ambassador is a great way to bring in new people that are going
to make Southwestern an even better place."
Amanda Willhite, admissions
counselor, is an ambassador
alumnus herself. She said it takes a special kind of person to give campus tours to prospective
students and their families. "You need to be personable, responsible, and someone who likes to meet new people," said Willhite.
Applications for the 2008-2009 school year are due by 5 p.m. March 28 in the Admissions
Office.
