Little practice and bad playing conditions did not affect the men's and women's golf teams at their first tournament of the year as both finished in second place.
Last Monday and Tuesday the men's and women's teams competed in the Lion Classic at the Hardscrabble Country Club in Fort Smith, Ark.
The tournament was hosted by the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Andrew Manley, accounting junior, led the Builders placing second out of 41 golfers with 76-73-149. Finishing in third was Tyler Lytton, business senior, with 72-78-150. Kenneth Wright, business sophomore, placed sixth with 79-75-154. Pat Fulton, business senior, finished in eighth with 73-83-156. Jared Paul, business sophomore, finished 20th with 82-82-164. Levi Moreland, business senior, placed 21st with 85-80-165. Westin Weeast, business junior, finished 37th 92-91-183. The team finished behind the host team.
Other teams at the tournament were Coffeyville Community College, Seminole State Community College, Arkansas-Monticello, Des Moines Area Community College, and Western Oklahoma Community College.
Lytton said, "I was satisfied with our performance especially because of the fact that we had not had the opportunity to play because of the weather."
The women's golf scores were not available at press time.
Kellner said, "I thought we did fabulous because of the fact that we have had terrible weather."
The players had to deal with cold weather, but they did not let it have an affect on their performance during the tournament. Koehn said, "I had to wear quiet a few more layers which can affect your swing, but other than that I tried not to let the cold affect me mentally."
Right now, the men are qualifying for their next competition, which will be the UST Texas Intercollegiate Tournament and will take place March 16 and 17 in Fort Worth, Texas. The tournament will be hosted by Texas Wesleyan University.
The next competition for all five women will be a home meet March 24 and 25.
