As college students on low income, it is often difficult to feel that one could possibly make a financial difference in the life of someone else. Discipleship Southwestern has initiated an opportunity to change that. Tony Lara, computer science junior, is the head of Discipleship's Kingdom Committee. In line with the mission statement of the group, each year they strive to help people outside of the United States in some significant way. This year, the group has chosen to support the Blood:Water mission, an organization "with a vision of clean blood and clean water in Africa," according to www.bloodwatermission.com. Lara said the Blood:Water mission builds safe houses for HIV positive Africans as well as digging wells to provide clean water for the natives. "We've had a lot of response, more than we expected," said Lara. "Sometimes it is hard to get college students to donate money to something, but this project is starting off well." Lara and his committee chose to give up pop for the Lenten season. They will take the money that they might have otherwise spent on sodas and donate it to the well building fund of Blood:Water mission, to give someone else a clean glass of water. They took their idea to the Discipleship group at large, and have opened up the chance for the entire campus community to donate as well. "$100,000 builds one well in Africa. If you give one dollar, you allow someone to drink clean water for one year," said Lara. Donation cans are located in Linda Shultz's office in Mossman, in the campus life office in the basement of the Student Center, as well as in the front door of Messenger Hall, before and after chapel services on Wednesdays. "We started Friday the eighth and will end our collection Easter Sunday, March 23," said Lara. "What the Kingdom committee does is get people to look outside of our little bubble and help someone else around the world," said Ashlee Alley, director of Discipleship Southwestern. "This project really does just that." For more information on how you can get involved, e-mail tony.lara@sckans.edu or visit www.bloodwatermission.com.
