Who is your presidential candidate?
As the 2008 presidential election nears, the caucuses approach.
The Cowley County Republican
caucus is Feb. 9 in Belle Plaine and the Democratic caucus
is at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 at First Christian Church, Winfield.
Todd Moore, chair of Cowley County Democrats, said, "If you haven't chosen your candidate, attending the caucus will be a perfect opportunity to listen to the platforms of the candidates."
Although the actual candidates won't be present, each candidate
will have a representative speaking about the issues.
Lasting about two hours, both caucuses will start by having voters go to a certain part of the room according to whom they support.
The representatives will speak, then the room will revote. There will be a count and percentages will be totaled.
Democratic Party candidates are Hilary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama, Dennis Kucinich,
Mike Gravel and John Edwards. The Republican candidates
are Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, Alan Keyes, John McCain, Ron Paul, and Mitt Romney.
Moore said, "If you want to attend and are not a registered voter or registered as independent,
then come 15 minutes early,
otherwise don't be there any later than 7 p.m."
The deadline to register with the county clerk to vote in the caucus is Jan. 25.
While choosing a candidate Moore suggests looking at how the candidates stand on the issues.
This can be done by going online, reading reliable sources or watching the debates.
Asking questions helps, such as 'Would this issue affect me?' 'Which side do I agree with stronger?' 'Does this candidate strongly support higher education?'
'Do they support my morals and values?' Moore also recommends being educated on the issues so you understand them completely.
