Every now and then people need help with class, and their professor might not always be the easiest person to ask, or to understand. Therefore it is a good school quality to have free tutoring for students who need it. George Gangwere, professor of physics, said it can be helpful for students to get help from tutors. "The tutors here are available in the evening and most students study in the evening, when faculty is not here," said Gangwere. "Sometimes students will give a different view on things than what a faculty member can, and it can be a different way of learning." Andrea Schneider, physics junior, is a tutor. "I think it is good for students to have somebody else to go to for questions, and also get help with problems," said Schneider. "Students seem to catch on to stuff a lot better through the semester if they take advantage of tutoring." Lisa Roth, history freshman, said tutoring can be important for all those students who might need it. "If they need help it is better for them to go and get help instead of putting the burden only on themselves. It can be very effective. It can make the difference between failing and passing a class." Tutoring for math and physics is available at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The English department's writing lab is also a great help for those students who need a little extra assistance with their writing. You can meet with a tutor and they can help you correct your papers or help you with the assignments you might need assistance with in order to do well in a class. If you need a little extra help, do not be afraid to ask your professor to help you get in contact with a tutor. Also, pay attention to the Jinx Tale or look at the Southwestern webpage for further details about tutoring and writing lab details. Inger Marie Furholt is a freshman majoring in journalism.
