The common reaction is, "What kind of coffee or breakfast counter opens at 11 a.m.?"

The Java Jinx is your answer.

Morning glories and people who like to eat in the evenings will be affected by the snack bar's new hours of operation. The Java Jinx will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and the grill will close at 7:30 p.m.

The snack bar's new weekend hours are 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the grill also closing at 7:30 p.m.

On Jan. 17, Sodexho, the on-campus dining service, issued an 'Important Food Service Notice' through the Jinx Tale listing its new hours.

The snack bar serves Starbucks coffee and has routinely served a breakfast menu.

"I don't like the idea of not having the option to get breakfast to go," says Nikki Thiel, Student Accounts and Enrollment Representative. "I didn't use it all of the time, but sometimes when I was running late, it was a nice convenience."

"I didn't even know about the hours changing," said Gloria Griffin, psychology sophomore. "I usually grab something from the Java Jinx in the middle of the guy's game after our women's game is over. That's after 7:30 though. I don't know what I'm going to do for food now," Griffin said.

The Java Jinx snack bar is the only other on campus food service outside of the cafeteria. It offers a different menu, and gives patrons the option to get food on the go.

Some of the breakfast menu is going to be moved into the cafeteria's now extended breakfast hours.

But the cafeteria requires visitors to sit down with their lunches and remain inside the cafeteria doors. No food is allowed outside of the cafeteria.

Another change in the Java Jinx is the price.

Melanie Robins, elementary education junior, said, "You can go into the cafeteria and eat whatever and however much you want on one meal credit. But now in the Java Jinx, it takes two credits just to get one cold sandwich, some fries and a drink. That doesn't even make sense."

Harold Harris, the general manager of dining services, said Sodexho has not made the decisions themselves.

"We get our orders from the school, the higher-ups. The decisions are based on lower enrollment numbers this semester," Harris said. "We don't usually have too many students come to the Java Jinx in the early mornings or in the late evenings, so we're changing some things."

More student and staff reaction, plus the reasons behind price changes and what President Merriman has to say will be in the Jan. 23 issue of The Collegian.
