Men lead conference with two wins

After two games last week, the men's basketball team is one of two teams with a 2-0 conference record. Southwestern hosts Kansas Wesleyan University Dec. 6. The Coyotes are 1-1 in conference and 3-5 overall. The Coyotes lost to Ottawa 75-72 Nov. 29 and defeated Bethany 74-62 Dec. 1.

The men will host Bethel College (1-1 in KCAC) Dec.8.

The men won a hard-fought game Dec. 1 against Ottawa University 88-83, pushing their record to 6-3. Two players led in scoring with 16 points each. Justin Diggles, sophomore guard, and Alwyn Jordan, junior guard, combined for 32 points. Others in double digits in scoring were Jarrett Tyler, junior guard, with 15 points and Rodney Jackson, senior forward, with 11 points.

The team was led in rebounding by Trey Merrifield, junior forward, with eight rebounds. Diggles contributed seven rebounds and five assists. David King, sophomore center, had six rebounds. The men won the rebounding battle 42-32.

Jordan said, "Coach is having us pick up the intensity in games especially rebounding. He wants us to win the rebounding battle every game and put pressure on the other team's ball handlers."

Southwestern hosted Friends University Nov. 29 to open conference play. The Moundbuilders overpowered the Falcons, winning 84-59. All five starters scored in double figures. King led the team with 22 points. Jackson added 15 points, Jordan had 14 points, Tyler had 13 points and Diggles added the triple-double with 12 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds.

Diggles said, "We are playing much better right now. We have worked hard in practice ever since our loss to Southwestern Christian University and it has showed. We are staying focused and we are not having any breakdowns in key situations."
