The Moundbuilder football team traveled to Hillsboro to take on the Blue Jays last Saturday. A defensive stand in the last couple of minutes allowed SC to come away with a 26-20 win.
Ken Crandall, head coach, said, "Anytime you can get a close win, there will always be some excitement. It was as if we played all four quarters. Everyone seemed to look at the last touchdown we scored, but the interception by freshman Jason Steeley at the end was a pretty big play. We have been coming closer as a team all year long, and this game was an indication of how close we have come."
At halftime the Moundbuilders led 18-13. Michael Coppock, running back, had a 50-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The two point conversion by Jeff Schaefer, quarterback, was no good. Jesse Lyons, quarterback, threw two touchdown passes to Ryan Molz, wide receiver. The first of the two was for 16 yards, and the second was for 6 yards. Both extra point kicks by Coppock were no good.
Crandall said, "We played hard for the whole game. We played well on both sides of the ball and on special teams. No team is perfect. There are still a couple of things that we need to work on. The main goal is turnovers."
The Moundbuilders came out of the locker room after halftime stronger. They were able to sack Tabor's quarterback in the end zone for a safety. This put the score to 20-13 in favor of SC.
The Blue Jays managed to score a touchdown by way of their running back. With the score tied, the football team knew what they had to do, which was to score. Lyons hooked up with Coppock for a 31-yard touchdown pass with little time remaining on the clock. Tabor still had a chance. With an interception by Steeley, the Moundbuilders took a knee to end the game.
