The men's tennis season is over. After Tuesday's 3-5 loss to Friends University they finished fifth in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Association.

Things looked pretty hopeful for the men's and women's teams until last week when the men lost both their matches.

It began with a nail-biter April 17 against Bethany College. The Builder men traveled to Wichita and were defeated at the Friends University courts.

John Paulin, head tennis coach, said, "Bethany is the defending KCAC and NAIA Region IV champion. Coach Vic Bateman has another string of nuclear players."

Although Mark Prenter, pre-med junior, remains one of the KCAC's premier players, his efforts were not enough to pull through a win for the team. Southwestern won no doubles matches and were only successful in two singles matches, Joel Wilke, liberal arts and sciences senior, vs. Welch and Prenter vs. Torrence.

"We were curious how Mark Prenter would do against Colin Torrence. Mark played almost flawless tennis. He is a tremendous tennis player," said Paulin.

They could always blame it on the rain.

The weather-shortened match ended in Bethany's favor 6-0, leaving the men with a record of 4-7 and 2-3 in the KCAC.

April 19 was the same story for the men's team.

"Tabor is a very solid team. They have only lost in KCAC play to Bethany. The bright side for SC continues to be the play of Mark Prenter and Joel Wilke at number 1 doubles and Mark at number 1 singles," said Paulin

The men's record was then 4-8 and 2-4 in the KCAC after their 2-7 loss to Tabor.

Tuesday's match against Friends in the quarterfinals was an unlucky finale to the season.

"This was the second time the match with Friends University was close. They beat us 5-4 three weeks ago and we knew it would depend on a win here or there. We didn't quite get there but the team played very well."

On the other hand, the women's team has been victorious.

"When Tabor jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches I knew we were in for a tough match. I was very pleased with our singles matches as we won 5 out of 6 to give us the win," said Paulin.

The final score of 6-3 made the women's season record 11-2 and 3-0 in the KCAC.
