I cannot believe some of the responses I have seen given to this opinion piece. We are all adults here, or at least we should be. I finally took the time to come read what Paige wrote because I heard about it from a classmate. I also heard that she was escorted off campus because she was threatened. I have no idea if that is true or not, but if it is I am incredibly disappointed in the one’s who felt the proper way to respond to a controversial opinion piece was by threatening the author. I have no comments to make on the actions of the football team. I do not know how much of the author’s opinion is fact, but something sparked her opinion. I do not particularly find excitement in the number of losses our team had this season. It has improved from last year, and I hope it continues to do so next year. I do not know Paige, I have never read her articles; I am one of the people who do not typically read the Collegian as has already been mentioned in the responses to this. But I find people who respond by saying they have lost all respect for her as a writer, or that she used to be such a great writer, are being incredibly simple-minded about the situation. Her writing has not changed; she merely gave an opinion that you disagreed with. You will always find people who have differing opinions than you. Saying she is a bad writer solely because of her opinion in this shows a lack of maturity; as does telling people to “shut up and mind their own business.” I am disappointed to see some of your responses are that the “article” should not have been allowed to be published. Is this not a free country? “Hasn’t anyone ever told you to keep your opinion to yourself?” “This is creating controversy and shouldn’t be allowed.” I’m paraphrasing some of the things I read, but that was the general gist of them. This country was created by people who saw something they disagreed with, something they thought was wrong, and they stood up to say something; and now when someone sees something they see as wrong, they’re told to sit back down, to keep quiet. I am not sure I can find the words to properly express my disappointment in my peers. We are the leaders of the future. Isn’t it about time we all began to act like it?
